1 Tim. 6:5; Mal. 3:8-12

The word tithe is the English translation of the Hebrew word that means “tenth.” In God’s covenant with Israel, the tithe was a requirement from eleven tribes that was meant to support the tribe of Levi, the priestly family who had no land on which to gain their income. God promised that if Israel was faithful in tithing, He would prosper the nation. Pastor Trevor does not see a direct carry-over of the tithing mandate in the New Covenant between Jesus and his Church. Yet he is still a fervent advocate for tithing. He gives nine practical reasons, and concludes with his main theological basis: that God’s offer in Malachi 3:8-12, he believes, is extended also to the Church. To hear the grounds for that claim, you have to listen! The point of the sermon is that tithing is God’s GIFT, not His tax. When Christians tithe, they are putting their money behind their claim that God is trustworthy. If God knows that we trust Him with our wealth, He knows that He can trust us with HIS wealth!
